Resolutions and Predictions

So this is a stupid New Years Post and maybe it’s a little late. Are you supposed to post these on New Years Eve? I don’t know. Anyway, here we go.

Resolutions:

- By May, I will be over half way done with HTDP.
- By May, I will have analyzed over 1000 songs for samples and make at least one composition from said samples.
- I will maintain a 3.5 GPA. Sure that’s probably not rigorous or demanding but discipline before excellence.
- I will blog and exercise (gym, jogging, or skateboarding) at least once a week.

Predictions:

- Solid State Drives will attain an across-the-board performance advantage with a reasonable size disadvantage by Q4 2009. (~256gb for $300 or ~$1.25/gb) Edit: Okay, that was really stupid and not what I meant to express. Solid State Drives already have an across the board performance advantage with a (for some definitions of) reasonable size disadvantage if you get a good drive (Read: Intel or Samsung). I was really trying to comment on affordability of said quality drives. The Intels are sitting at $500/80gb right now and I don’t know about the Samsungs. I’m predicting ~$300/256gb by the end of 2009. I’m leaving myself leeway by not stating whether or not I mean fiscal 2009.
- No console will have a strong lead by the end of 2009 and we’ll have to call this generation Console War a draw.
- Linux and Mac will continue to infiltrate the consumer market but will not exceed 10% of worldwide market share.
- The MPAA will follow the RIAA’s lead and stop their lawsuits to pursue alternative means of Intellectual Property Rights enforcement.
- IP Law and laws covering digital property and privacy will see increased scrutiny and public awareness. (Hey, I’m just hoping.)

What haven’t I thought of that I should have?

  1. This generation’s console war a draw? Blasphemy!

Just kidding. They’ve all got something they do better than the other guy’s machine. Having owned all three at one point in time, I think the Wii may honestly fall behind the PS3 and 360. The race between those two will be a flat out slugfest eventually, with haymaker games and feature updates until nobody gives a fuck anymore and they’ve already put out the 720(?) and the PS4.

Windows 7 this year. Vista’s a total bust. They’ll try to cut their losses by throwing down W7 and saying “Look at THIS shit, it’s dope!” And from what I hear, so far it is. Mac will stagger and push ads that say W7 is just a new Vista, so it’s still crap. MS will counter with more Jerry Seinfeld, which is always a winner. The actual advertising will be more word-of-mouth style, since it’s a BIG improvement over Vista. Mac sales drop a hair.

New iPhone that can reposition satellites in orbit and wipe your ass. (Ha.)

Indeed. It’s not so much that no console is dominant as that each is specializing on niche markets. I also concur that Microsoft and Sony are targeting a plurality of niche markets (game market X + home theatre market) as opposed to Nintendo (just game market X). The race between those two is already a flat-out slugfest in my opinion. Of course, some people just want a simple games machine and Nintendo is calling their name.

No comment on W7 until I see running code. Yes, Vista is a total bust. I don’t know what Apple’s evil schemes are. To be honest, I don’t pay them much attention…back to Linux and being a lonely nerd. ;-)

What happened to you running Ubuntu anyway?

  3. As I’ve told you some eight trillion times, my Ubuntu is botched. It’s stuck in some retard-o loop of “You don’t have this driver available. Do you want to install and use it?” and upon reboot it goes “You don’t have..” yadda yadda yadda. I told you I’d install your shit if you’d give me a hand.

  4. Haha. You should know better than let Brit touch your PC! Come on. I keed, I keed. The “war” has already started to edge out in my opinion. As much as it hurts to say this, I am currently tossing my chips on 360. About as much 3rd party support as the PS2, an online community that has 2 years experience and seems to actually be improving GUI-wise, talks of actual cross-console gaming becoming more regular, (PC w/ 360).
I am a huge Sony fan-boy, and I don’t think this means Sony won’t play anymore, but I know they aren’t the dominant force they were with the PS2. No huge stand-out games have been announced as solo efforts for the PS3, except FFXIII Versus, but when has any system banked on an RPG to be the big ace-in-the-hole? PS3′s Home community is… interesting, but not as appealing as on paper. Lots of bells and whistles, and let’s not forget Blu-ray go to the PS3, but as far as gaming community, they have some catching up to do. No doubt about it.
And Wii… Let’s just say since I let my brother borrow SSBB, it hasn’t been plugged into the wall. I own all 6 of the M rated games for it! Only 2 of them are decent. It’s a party system, and if it weren’t for Guitar Hero, Wii would be dominating in that field without any competition. But X&P both have Guitar Hero and Rock Band, which at least gives them SOMETHING to bring to the party table.

Lastly, screw 7. I’m about ready to trash this Vista-64 and go all out ME! WHOOO!
